The 5th Annual Leadership Symposium: Stories of Our Sisters, was held October 17-19, 2008 in Arlington, VA at the Women in Military Service for America Memorial. Over 30 distinguished speakers and 200 participants from the military, public and private sectors were in attendance from around the globe. The theme, Stories of Our Sisters, honored the role of women in the military and in building our nation throughout the course of history. We were privileged to be joined by women from all branches of the military with service eras ranging from WWII to present. This convergence of wisdom and experience reminded us, yet again, that we are forever bound by our common histories. Please share your history and join us for upcoming symposia and AcademyWomen events. We hope to see you there!

AcademyWomen hosted its inaugural Leadership in Bloom Spring Summit April 18-20, 2008. This theme points to the fact that there were large numbers of young women in attendance who were JROTC, SROTC, and Air Force Academy cadets who had the rare opportunity to be mentored and inspired by women who walked a similar path. These women helped to instruct and inspire attendees towards the leadership our nation and world need today and into the future. Our distinguished keynote speakers included Congresswoman Heather Wilson, Major Nicole Malachowski, the 1st woman Thunderbird Pilot, Polly Chavez, a Historian of Camp Capitan and Cadet Alea Nadeem, who as a child was taken against her will to live in Iraq. Please plan to attend future Leadership Summits. We hope to see you there!

The 4th Annual Leadership Symposium: Where Do We Go From Here, Charting Our Course for the Next 30 Years was held October 26-28, 2007 in Arlington, VA at the Women in Military Service for America Memorial. Over 20 distinguished speakers from the military, public and private sectors were in attendance to provide inspirational and informative panels, keynote sessions and workshops on a wide range of topics regarding overall wellness: professionally, emotionally and financially. Academy women from across the nation attended this hugely successful event to reconnect and network with friends, colleagues and mentors. Many reignited dormant dreams and discovered new ways to plan for future success. Others simply enjoyed an environment where they felt completely understood and supported. Whatever your reason for attending, we hope you’ll join us for upcoming symposia and AcademyWomen events. We’ll see you there!

The 3rd Annual AcademyWomen Symposium, held October 20-22, was a fabulous success! The Symposium’s theme, “Leading on all Fronts” highlighted the many ways in which we have chosen to define ourselves through the gift we have fought hard to learn, the gift of leadership. We demonstrate this gift in every aspect of our lives in our “…ever changing roles as mother, daughter, sister to worker, fighter, and survivor”…we lead on all fronts. Every service was represented at the Symposium with discussions focusing on how to facilitate successful, fulfilling lives, both in and out of the military. The symposium provided all participants the chance to reconnect with old friends, make new connections, and refocus with new perspective.

Our thanks to the 45+ speakers who shared with us their life’s passion and wisdom. These inspiring speakers shared their triumphs and in so doing, fueled the flame that lies within every woman to achieve her own dreams. They shared personal stories of joy and their struggles to find balance, reach personal goals, and achieve happiness. Our speakers were comprised of up-and-coming and senior leaders in the military, government and civilian sectors. What an amazing opportunity it was to experience the juxtaposition of talent our speakers represented: youth contrasted by experience, civilian paired with military, theoretical meshed with operational. Cadets and midshipmen exchanged thoughts and ideas with generals and admirals. Corporate CEOs and senior military leaders united on the same stage to share common lessons of leadership and success. Academians meshed theory with the day-to-day battlefield challenges that our combat women officers retold.

From the moment you entered the auditorium, there was a palpable sense that there was a powerful force at work in the room. We were amongst individuals who truly understood, and in most cases, shared our common history, our struggles, our experiences, our successes…and most importantly, our strength. We were sisters who traveled from across the United States to be together and celebrate our common bond. Let us all remember that in unity there is strength. AcademyWomen exists to support you. We support you in your challenges. We support your successes. We support your dreams. We believe in your greatness and the potential that lies within.

If you weren’t able to join us for this year’s symposium, please plan to join us next year. Until then, stay involved with AcademyWomen in a way that interests you personally, such as mentoring, program planning or contributing to the newsletter.
