Esther Blake

Sergeant, US Air Force

First woman in the Air Force

Esther Blake joined the newly formed Air Force on the first hour of the first day it was authorized for women on July 8, 1948.  She was a widow and a mother of two sons fighting in the war.  She wanted to free a soldier from clerical work to be able to fight and hasten an end to the war.   Assigned to numerous bases throughout the United States, Esther served her country until 1954 when she went into civil service at the Veterans Regional Headquarters in Montgomery, Ala.
