Monica Lin Brown
Sargeant., US Army
Silver Star Recipient
Monica is the first woman in Afghanistan and only the second female soldier since World War II to receive the Silver Star. She saved the lives of fellow soldiers after a roadside bomb tore through a convoy of Humvees in April 2007. She ran through enemy gunfire and shielded her wounded comrades with her body as mortars fell less than 100 yards away.
The Army said Brown's "bravery, unselfish actions and medical aid rendered under fire saved the lives of her comrades and represents the finest traditions of heroism in combat." However, since this was prior to women being allowed into combat she was pulled out of the remote camp in Paktika province. Her platoon commander said that Army restrictions on women in combat barred her from such missions.
